1 john 3:11-13

1 John 3:11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.

This first verse reminds us again that we are to love one another as Christ loved us. This is a central theme throughout all the New Testament. Also remember that Jesus said many times that love covers a multitude of sins. Showing love as should to our neighbor is a key factor in people seeing us as a child of god. In the next verse John shows us the opposite of love through the life of Cain, who was of the wicked one. Cain slew his own brother because his works were evil and Able’s works were righteous. So in verse thirteen we see that we are not to be surprised when we find out that most of the world hates us because we can show love to them because we are a child of God.
