1 Corinthians 11 : 6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. 7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

We have to remember that these scriptures are talking of the customs they had in their time and it was customary for a woman to have a covering on her head. If she did not it in those days she might as well shave her head if is not going to cover it because of the shame it would bring.  The man on he other hand should not cover his head because it is man who bears the glory of God uniquely by his role. Men and women were both created in God’s image but man is given a sphere of sovereignty as the earthly sovereign over God’s created order. We know that these traditions which were mostly mans is not in effect today but we should respect the order that God put in place when it comes to the role of the man and the woman in society today.

1 Corinthians 11 : 4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. 5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.

Paul is simply saying here that it is disgrace to to have a hat or anything on head when you are praying. This is also saying that a man should not pray in public with his hat on because we know that the head of man is Christ and when he is praying or prophesying then it should be obvious that Christ is his head and show proper respect. This next scripture Paul is saying wherever and whenever women do pray and proclaims the Word appropriately then they must do so maintaining a proper distinction from men. In the culture of Corinth, a woman’s covered head while ministering or worshiping was a symbol to signify a subordinate relationship to her husband. Paul is saying here there is nothing spiritual about wearing or not wearing a covering and that there is no absolute law for women to wear veils or coverings in all churches for all time, but is declaring that the symbols of the divinely established male and female roles are to be genuinely honored in every culture even today.

1 Corinthians 11 : 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

Here Paul tells us Christ is the head of the church as its Savior and Lord and He is also Lord over every unbeliever. We also see that the man is the head of the house which means he rules over the household. He is the head of the wife, in the flesh realm but not in the spirit realm, as Christ is the head of the church. As the Lord delivered His church from the dangers of sin, death and hell, so the husband provides for, protects, preserves and loves his wife, leading her to blessing as she submits. The family on earth is a replica of the family in heaven and Father God is over all the believers in Christ which are the bride of Christ. The family on earth should still observe the man being the head of his family and in this Paul is trying to teach the people how to live peaceably on the earth. I believe there is so much discord in our society today because so many homes do not have a man to lead it.

1 Corinthians 11 : 1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. 2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.

Paul begins this chapter telling the people he has tried to live the kind of life that they could follow. We have seen it more than once that the kind of life we lead is a sermon that we preach every day and this is what Paul was saying. He wanted to be the best Christian example he could be for people to pattern their lives after him because he felt his walk was full of Christ. As a Christian this is how we should live and fell that we can be that witness that helps someone find their way to Christ.  Next Paul is lifting up the followers because they have chosen to follow the practices that he has set up for them and did away with the things that were not of God. This shows us that we should always encourage those that have chosen to follow the Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 10 : 32 Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: 33 Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

I believe Paul here is telling us that we need to allow people to believe the way they want to. In today’s time it could mean we do not need to put other denominations down but  witness to them so they are being led in the wrong direction they will be able to make an informed choice. We also do not need to condemn those that are not saved but also witness to them by living our life for Christ in front of them every day, so they will desire what we have. Paul winds this chapter up by saying he was all things to all men. He did what he had to do to get in the door and then preached the Gospel of Christ to everyone who would receive  it. He ministered to people where they were it did not have to be in a church. The ultimate object of Paul, which should be our object as well, was to get as many as he could saved. 1 Corinthians 10 : 30 For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks? 31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Again we are seeing even if we know we are right in what we are doing if but we cause some one else to stumble who is young in their faith some make speak badly about us. So we need to be careful in how we handle things around younger believers. Paul finishes these two verses letting us know that everything we have and everything we are is by the grace of God. In everything we do, whether it be  eating or drinking or the work we do or the fun we have, we should always praise God for what He has given and how He has blessed us. We are what God allows us to be so we should always be praising God!

1 Corinthians 10 : 28 But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof: 29 Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man’s conscience?

Here Paul is saying that if we are in the presence of unbelievers and something is offered to us that was offered to idols and their is a new believer in the mist the n we should not partake of what was offered. He is saying it is better to offend the nonbeliever than the weaker Christian because love to other believers is the strongest witness we can have. He goes onto say that if our liberty is judged by the one we offended, meaning he is judging us because we might offend a weaker brother with our freedom, will cause the offended person to condemn us. This tells us we should not worry about how the unbeliever views our actions if we are doing the will of God and know that what we are doing is with love for our weaker brothers.

1 Corinthians  10 : 25 Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake: 26 For the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof. 27 If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

When you are offered meat to eat you should not run an investigation to find out where it came from. If it had been offered to an idol then it would not have been a sin to eat it so don’t ask and there will be no guilt for eating it. Paul continues in this last verse to say eat whatever is set before you and pray over it to make it clean and if you do not ask where it came from then you do not feel guilty. 1 Timothy 4: 4-5 says it in a good way what Paul is saying here “For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.” We can see from this scripture that sometimes we do not need to question what God is leading us to do we just need to do it  because the earth is the Lord’s and the fullness there of.

1 Corinthians 10 : 23 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. 24 Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.

The liberty the Christian has must not be used to do anything that might provoke God but must be used in such a way to build God up. We should never use the privilege the Lord has afforded us for self-edification instead  all things should be done decently and in order. Next we see that greed is one of the main cause of sin when we know God promised to take care of all our needs, but he did not promise to take care of our greed. If we spend our time to help someone in need we will be blessed by God. To use another scripture,  in Philippians 2:3 it says, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. These two verses help show how edification is better than gratification and how you should put others above our selves.

1 Corinthians  10 : 21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. 22 Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

Paul is telling the people here these two things are not compatible. He is letting them know they can not be on both sides of the fence, it has got to be one or the other. They cannot no longer worship the idols they were worshiping if they are a partaker of the cup of Lord. The Lord is the light of the and darkness cannot share space with the light.  God is a jealous God and he tolerates no competition but rather punishes it. The first of the commandments is “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” We must be very careful not to even think, or speak of another god. We should know also no that no one is stronger than God because we know Satan thought he could be more powerful than God but we know how that turned out.
