Proverbs 9:13 A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.
14 For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
15 To call passengers who go right on their ways:
16 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.
A foolish person is someone who does not know the ways of God. This person has no morals and their actions are the opposite of wisdom. Foolishness is a rejection of God and this kind of person knows nothing of any importance. Again we see where the harlot calls out to her victims and they are people who do not know God or have rejected Him. Those who partake of this sin or any sin are going the way of the world and because they have not wisdom they also lack understanding. Forbidden things always seem better and more exciting because of their danger and excitement This act of sin, as any sin, leads to hell and destruction and flattering words of folly lead to death. It is interesting that wisdom offered meat and wine to her guests and the foolish offers bread and water. It seems that the world wants only the forbidden fruit. Death and hell await the foolish that reject God.
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
12 If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
This verse is familiar and the fear it talks about here is a healthy fear and means if we reverence God it is the beginning of wisdom and with that comes the knowledge and an understanding of who God is. Next it says our days shall be multiplied not necessarily in this life but if we follow God’s leadership and live for Him we will have unlimited days in eternity with Him. Last it says that it is our own responsibility to seek wisdom and if we reject it then it is our own loss. We have heard it said before that each of us is responsible for our own salvation so the choices we make reflects how we live.
Proverbs 9:7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
Here we are seeing that when we witness to sinner and they argue with us it does no good. If they argue with you it is better to just leave them alone. A lot times when we try to correct someone they get mad and it could cause them to hate us. We have often heard it said if a preacher does not step on his congregations toes pretty often he is not a good preacher. With this we can see if a wise man is corrected he is glad so he will have the chance to repent. Those who are wise are eager to take instruction from someone who knows a little more about the subject. The only people who can increase in learning are the ones who want to learn. Christians should always be ready to learn more no matter how well educated they are, God is always ready to give us more wisdom so we can grow in righteousness and be a better witness to those who are lost.
1 Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
2 She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.
3 She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
4 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
5 Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
6 Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
A wise person builds a house that is complete and will withstand anything this world can throw at it. The seven means it is a complete house full in size and fit for a banquet. Seven means spiritually complete, and we see the perfection that God will build His house. The banquet is complete with mingle wine, which is diluted with water to keep form having an intoxicating affect, and
beast and all the fixings. Wisdom here sends out the call to people to come into the feast just as Christ will call His church in to the marriage supper. The invitation goes out to the less fortunate to come because they are more receptive to acquiring wisdom and understanding. Wisdom ask that they eat of the feast prepared and drink of the mingled wine, this is symbolic of Jesus offering the bread and wine at the last supper. Only fools say there is no God so we need to stay away from these people and turn from our own foolish ways so we can use the wisdom and understanding we gained from the feast.
Proverbs 8:33 Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
36 But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.
These verses remind most of of something we do not like to hear and that is to listen to instruction and to have enough wisdom to accept it. If we do this it says we will be blessed and that we need to do this daily waiting for a word form God. You may say God does not talk to me every day but He will if you talk to Him, when you call some one on the phone you expect for the other person to talk back to you, so talk to God everyday and see what He has to say. This goes on to say if we seek Him we will find favor with from the Lord which means he responds to us. Lastly it says that any one who does not follow the leading of the Lord and sins is only hurting themselves. It says that all hate the wisdom of God and the love of that was given to us from Jesus Christ love death. This means they will spend eternity in hell with Satan. John 1:4 “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” Mark 16:16 “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
22 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:29 When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
30 Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;31 Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.32 Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
This scripture is focusing on the beginning of time and the fact that the wisdom of God was ever present there. It was created even before the earth was and was created for an everlasting time. Verse 24 through 29 let us see that wisdom was there through the whole creation. When the earth was covered by water, before the land masses were formed, before He made the heavens, and when He made the earth round and established boundaries between land and sea wisdom was there. God always knew wisdom was present and a necessary component that man needed. Wisdom rejoiced to be part of creation God and able to see this creation and praise God for what He done. Now again we see where wisdom tells us to hearken unto it and desire to have it and keep its ways so we can be blessed. The blessed of the Lord are the ones who walk in His ways. Those filled with the wisdom of God are wise unto their own salvation. If you are still not attending a church that preaches the truth of God’s word I ask that you find one today and begin learning about the wisdom of God and pray that you may acquire it. We all belong to God as it says in scripture John 1:1-3 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.2 The same was in the beginning with God.3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Proverbs 8:19 My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
20 I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:
21 That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
We see hear that what God supplies us with is better than any Gold or silver or any kind riches we might try to obtain on our own. Solomon because of his wisdom and listening to God and being obedient was and would be today the richest man on earth. Other scriptures tell us in James 3:17 “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” James 3:18 “And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.” God leads us if listen to Him in the directions we should go in Isaiah 30:21 “And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” When we do this we have an inheritance of substance and our treasures will be overflowing. The Lord throughout Scripture has not only protected, but prospered His people, that is the promise here, too. God protects and blesses His own, if they will walk in His path.
Proverbs 8:17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
18 Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.
God’s love for man was shown in Him giving us His son. We do not have to question the live He has for us and if we love Him He will reveal Himself to us. If we love God with all our heart and soul He will bless us with more than we could ever imagine. He will bless us in every area of our lives, in houour , riches, and in righteousness. All we have to do is love Him and share His love with everyone we come in contact with.
Proverbs 8:15 By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
16 By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
As we have been learning how important wisdom is we can see that God is the one that puts people in power. We may not want to think it but even if the people who are put in power are not Godly people it means God allowed it to happen. If we know about the children of Israel they asked for a king because everybody had one and so God gave them kings and they found out it was not what they needed. So again this is where wisdom comes into play when we ask God for things be careful to know it is what you need. Be knowledgeable enough to know what and who to ask for in your life because even if we ask amiss we could get what we ask. In Romans 13:1 “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”
Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
14 Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
We learned earlier that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. If this is the case then we are to hate what God hates. We know evil is not of God and we have already learned that pride is the opposite of being humble. Arrogance just goes right along with pride and has nothing to do with understanding the wisdom of God. Wisdom hates pride and self exaltation above all. Wisdom hates all the bad things we have been talking about and loves the things of the Lord. Wisdom is what brought Solomon all the benefits he had. It gave him the understanding he needed. Understanding is a side benefit of wisdom, as well wisdom is understanding. In Isaiah 11:2, we read, “And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;” Again we see in this scripture just how important wisdom is.
