In south central Alabama, where I live, it’s very unusual to have snow, much less enough to shut down schools, businesses and roads in the area. But that’s exactly what happened on Friday. We got about 4 inches of snow altogether, and it was beautiful!

Three of our granddaughters and their dad made a snowman in the front yard, threw snowballs and tasted snow. I hope they made lots of good memories because they may not ever get another chance to see this much snow. I only remember two other times like this: the last time was in 1993, and snow piled up in drifts everywhere; some ditches had snow for a week afterwards.

The only other time I remember was in the mid-70s. Snow was 7 or 8 inches deep on top of cars and everything was covered. My dad’s parents, who always seemed very strait-laced to my brothers and I, actually got out and built a snowman with us – they had never seen snow.

It was fun to act like a kid again- I’m glad I live in a place where commonplace miracles like snow can make such a huge difference in my day.

I can’t believe it’s November – the old saying about life is so true: Life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes. I’m on the older side of 50 now, so I guess I’m on the downhill slide.

So many things going on here now, I thought I’d give you a general update along with my thoughts on them.

our oldest son Brandon and his family moved up here from Crestview week before last. The girls are enrolled in school and for the most part are enjoying it. Dyllan will start this week (he moved up the week after everyone else). They all attended their first Luverne High School football game on Friday night and seemed to have a good time. Brandon explained the basics of the game to them, and how to read the scoreboard, so they got very enthusiastic every time Luverne had the ball. it’s been so much fun being able to see the kids every day.

we just adopted a miniature schnauzer a couple weeks ago. Her name is Tinkerbell and she’s 8 weeks old tomorrow. She gets along well with Cookie the shih tzu, and all three cats: Ricky Bobby, Garfield and Junior. She thinks she’s a rottweiler from the way she behaves, jumping on Cookie and wrestling him to the ground over any toys he’s got that she wants. I’m working on getting her used to the sound of the bikes so I can teach her to ride with me.

our pastor’s last day was last Wednesday night, so our church is officially looking for a new pastor. We had a guest speaker yesterday morning, and last night we had a short devotional. I know this will be a challenge to our church, but I believe we’re going to grow together through this, and it will make us stronger as a family.

our town’s homecoming weekend is next April, and we’re starting the planning meetings soon- I hope to have as many good workers this time as we did for the first one. We want to grow it into a nice festival and I think we’ve laid the groundwork for it.

Now, I’ve got to start getting my Christmas list together, and start working on our family’s Christmas card.

I’ve been challenged by Angelika over at Angelika Heart Talk to share a smile today, so here goes:
When my older kids were little, they enjoyed watching Disney’s Sing a Long Songs videos. One of our favorites was Figaro and Cleo from Pinnochio.

Anytime I want to visit those days again, all I need to do is catch one of these video clips on Youtube and I’m there again, on the sofa with my kids, all of us singing along.
I have four favorite grandsons, Hunter, Dyllan, Reid and Talan, as well as six favorite granddaughters, named Chloe, Khloe, Destiny, Laynie, Nevaeh [read hers backwards!] and our newest one, who will be born sometime this fall.
Here’s a story about Reid:
This last fall, I was talking to Reid (who is 2 1/2 and helps his dad farm and take care of the cows), and asked him about his newest surprise. He looked at me and said, “I got a trike-cycle!” I said, “Well, my goodness! What color is it, red?” He looked at me with these big solemn eyes, and said, scornfully, “No, it’s GWEEN!”
I should have known- what self-respecting John Deere-tractor-riding farmer boy would ride a Massey-Ferguson red trike-cycle?
And just so I represent the girls as well, here’s one from Laynie:
Laynie, who is four, has a nice fenced in back yard with a trampoline. Once when we were visiting her, I talked to her while she jumped. When I asked her if she jumped a lot, she said, “Yes, I like to, but the neighbors don’t like for me to because sometimes I jump over their fence.” All this was said with a straight face and no thought beforehand. If she doesn’t work in the entertainment field, I’m going to be surprised.
These are just some of the reasons I love talking to my grandchildren- they educate me in so many ways, I can’t even count. If I don’t learn something from them, it’s because I’m not paying attention.
If you need a smile, and can’t find one, just hang around a little kid for a little while- they’ll loan you one of theirs.
