It’s November!

02/11/09

I can’t believe it’s November – the old saying about life is so true: Life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes. I’m on the older side of 50 now, so I guess I’m on the downhill slide.

So many things going on here now, I thought I’d give you a general update along with my thoughts on them.

  • our oldest son Brandon and his family moved up here from Crestview week before last. The girls are enrolled in school and for the most part are enjoying it. Dyllan will start this week (he moved up the week after everyone else).  They all attended their first Luverne High School football game on Friday night and seemed to have a good time. Brandon explained the basics of the game to them, and how to read the scoreboard, so they got very enthusiastic every time Luverne had the ball. it’s been so much fun being able to see the kids every day.
  • we just adopted a miniature schnauzer a couple weeks ago. Her name is Tinkerbell and she’s 8 weeks old tomorrow. She gets along well with Cookie the shih tzu, and all three cats: Ricky Bobby, Garfield and Junior. She thinks she’s a rottweiler from the way she behaves, jumping on Cookie and wrestling him to the ground over any toys he’s got that she wants. I’m working on getting her used to the sound of the bikes so I can teach her to ride with me.
  • our pastor’s last day was last Wednesday night, so our church is officially looking for a new pastor. We had a guest speaker yesterday morning, and last night we had a short devotional. I know this will be a challenge to our church, but I believe we’re going to grow together through this, and it will make us stronger as a family.
  • our town’s homecoming weekend is next April, and we’re starting the planning meetings soon- I hope to have as many good workers this time as we did for the first one. We want to grow it into a nice festival and I think we’ve laid the groundwork for it.

Now, I’ve got to start getting my Christmas list together, and start working on our family’s Christmas card.

Home for a Bunny

24/04/09

When my older daughter was a little girl, she had several books that she really loved. One of those books was Home for a Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown. We had it in the Big Golden Book version, and we read it until the spine turned loose and the pages fell out.
I loved reading to her as much as she loved hearing it- after a while we had it memorized: “Down the road and down the road he went. He was going to find a home of his own. A home for a bunny, a home of his own…”
Now my own sweet little girl is a grown-up girl and has a sweet little boy of her very own. He loves books as much as his mommy did.
I’ve been looking for another copy of that book for several months now, but none of the bookstores carried the Golden Books anymore. I finally decided to go online and of course I immediately found it on the Books-a-Million site, along with another book my daughter had loved: The Golden Egg Book which features another bunny and a pretty egg.
I also found a book called Seven Little Postmen – a sweet little story originally written in the 1950s, about a little boy who sends a special letter to his granny.
I ordered copies of each book, including an extra copy of the Postmen book for my house. They came in today’s mail and I can hardly wait until I can take Reid and his Mommy their new books.

Turning Flips

07/10/08

Don’t you just love little kids? They’re so open to most anything, and they have such wonderful imaginations.
One of our younger granddaughters, who is three, just had a baby brother. We went to visit them all, and she asked if I would come outside and watch her jump on the trampoline. While she jumped and showed off, I asked her some questions, just to keep her talking. I asked if she could turn a flip while she jumped, and without hesitation, she said, ‘No, the neighbors don’t like me to turn flips, ’cause I might flip over their wall (fence).’
She has a wonderful imagination, and always has something funny to say. I know that we adults don’t need to walk around spouting whatever comes to mind, but wouldn’t it be great if we could lift the weight that keeps our minds from coming up with these wonderful stories?
